 Prevent sleepiness while studying

Don't we sometimes feel sleepy while we are studying?

Does it always happen when we are trying to read something?

Or does it only happen when we are reading something that is not interesting to us?

Let's learn about the cause of this sleepiness first.

Cause of the sleepiness while studying:

There are several causes of this sleepiness. Different people have different opinions, as well as

different issues with which this occurs. Sometimes these opinions or issues match our situation,

and if we follow the methods that are told by people who are facing them, we might be able to

solve our issue. But we really need some methods that actually work. We can feel sleepy for

various reasons. Such as:

● Not staying hydrated.

● Giving the body too much comfort.

● Not understanding what the author is trying to explain.

● Reading something that does not feel interesting.

● Not getting enough sleep during the night.

● Being exhausted because of other daily chores.

These are the causes that we think are responsible for our sleepiness. But, do we know or want to

know what science has to offer about this topic?

Actually, science does not also definitely know the cause. But some of them think that our brain

cells, which we use to store information and memories (they are called neurons), need rest after a

certain period of time. Thus, if we don't give rest to our brain, it won't function properly and will

crave rest, which is why we might feel sleepy while studying. But is it true in every aspect?

There are some people who feel sleepy even when they complete their sleep cycle. Sleepiness

can also occur due to dehydration. Again, sometimes it happens when we are bored with the topic

or when we don't understand what is written in the textbook. This happens because our brain

naturally responds that way. Moreover, if we lie in bed while we are studying, we feel extremely

sleepy. If we give our body too much comfort (for instance, by lying in bed, sitting, or lying in

front of a table fan or AC), we will definitely feel sleepy. Another cause that some people might

not agree with is that sometimes studying something that we already know about might give us a

sense of relaxation, which results in sleepiness.

Now that we know so many reasons why we feel sleepy, let us learn how to actually deal

with this sleepiness while studying.

Stay Hydrated:

"Being adequately hydrated is essential for ensuring your body functions as it

should—and not just during the day."

Explains Jackie Newgent, a plant-forward culinary nutritionist and author of The Clean & Simple

Diabetes Cookbook, who believes that being hydrated prevents every negative impact that our

body might face due to a lack of water.

Water helps us not only in cell function but also helps to prevent sleepiness by helping our brain

cells get enough hydration.

Turn off the fan or AC while studying:

When we study, sometimes we sit in front of a table fan or turn the AC on in order to get cool air.

Some of us might notice that when we sit in front of a table fan, we automatically feel sleepy.

Again, when the AC is at a low temperature, we tend to feel cold, which makes our body

vulnerable to sleep. So, we can simply turn off the fan or AC in our room and give our body an

uncomfortable feel. This will surely lessen the sleepiness.

Understanding by watching:

Sometimes we feel sleepy because we cannot understand a certain topic by simply reading.

Writing also just makes us exhausted. In that case, we can try to understand those topics by

watching diagrams, videos, or other materials that are available online.

Get Power Naps:

Even if we have a very important exam the next day and we don't have enough time to rest, we

should always take power naps in between study hours so that we can give our brain the time to

rest and a chance to store the information that we learned. This way, we won't get sleepy while

studying.

I always believe "less is more." So I tried to give a few but the most effective ways by which

we can prevent, or at least lessen, the sleepiness that we face while studying. I hope it helps

the students.
